He first gained attention in the early 1980s for his virtuosic yet highly musical playing, releasing his debut solo album Tones in 1986. His follow-up, Ah Via Musicom (1990), brought him international acclaim — the track “Cliffs of Dover” won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, and remains one of the most celebrated instrumental guitar pieces ever recorded.
Johnson is known not only for his impeccable technical skill but also for his deep focus on tone and touch. His signature sound — often achieved with a Fender Stratocaster, tube amplifiers, and analog effects — has become legendary among guitar enthusiasts, often described as “pure, singing, and unmistakably Eric.”
In addition to his solo career, he has collaborated with artists such as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai as part of the G3 tour, and has released numerous albums including Venus Isle, Bloom, Up Close, EJ, and The Book of Making. Beyond his guitar work, he is also an accomplished vocalist, pianist, and composer, continually exploring new sonic and emotional landscapes.
